Biography
Sonia Regina Bordin Aykroyd DDS MSc FIADFE is an internationally recognized clinician scientist with over 39 years of academic, clinical, and research experience across Brazil, the UK, and the USA. A pioneer in laser dentistry since 1990, she later expanded her expertise into artificial intelligence, becoming a leading voice in AI enhanced diagnostics, dental automation, and digital transformation in oral healthcare.
She holds a Master’s in Dental Sciences from the Eastman Dental Institute, University of London, and is completing her Ph.D. in Photomedicine and Biotechnology at De Montfort University, UK. Dr. Bordin Aykroyd has served as a visiting scholar at Texas A&M University, the University of Nevada, and the University of São Paulo, contributing to interdisciplinary research in photonics, craniofacial biology, and advanced technologies.
Her leadership includes serving as Director of the North America Division of the World Federation for Laser Dentistry and as Founder and Past President of the IADR Lasers & Biophotonics Scientific Group. She is a voting member of ADA/ANSI/ISO committees shaping global standards for dental lasers, artificial intelligence, electronic dental records, and infection control technologies. Her contributions have earned her international recognition, including the Top 100 World Doctors award and the IADR Founder & Past President Award. She lectures globally, has published extensively in the field, and serves as a scientific journal reviewer for multiple peer reviewed publications, including Nature.
