Biography
Emily Pokou is a marine and freshwater biologist with a background in aquatic ecology, conservation, fisheries science, and science communication. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine and Freshwater Biology from the University of Guelph, Canada, and a Master of Science in Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation from the University of Exeter, England. Her research interests span marine and freshwater ecology, fish biology, reproductive and life-history traits, aquatic biodiversity, fisheries management, and the social and cultural dimensions of aquatic resource use. Her research has included investigating the socio-cultural drivers of shark and ray meat consumption in South Asia and examining relationships between reproductive and biological traits in Amazonian freshwater fishes. Emily is particularly interested in interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches that bring together ecological and social science perspectives, participatory and community-based research, citizen science, and public engagement to address conservation challenges and support evidence-based conservation and sustainable fisheries management. She is also actively involved in science communication and outreach, with a focus on connecting scientific research with conservation practice and making aquatic science accessible to broader audiences.
